CHAMBER CANCELS 2008 SEAFEST

Organizers for the Cocoa Beach Area Chamber of Commerce’s annual SeaFest, citing economic uncertainty and less than adequate financial backing from sponsorships decided today to cancel the 2008 event, slated for April 4, 5 and 6 at Port Canaveral.

While the three-day festival had garnered sufficient media and in-kind support, cash sponsorships -which cover the hard costs for staging the event- had not been realized. The Chamber’s board of directors recognized that the risk of going forward without the necessary funding and relying solely on attendance and on-site food and beverage sales to achieve its revenue goal could negatively impact the organization’s finances should that goal not be realized. It hopes that an improving economy in the next year will allow the event to be staged in 2009.

“The level of in-kind support from the business community and the excitement from the general public over SeaFest coming back home to Port Canaveral was overwhelming,” said Chamber President and CEO, Randy Harris. “However, I believe trepidation over economic uncertainties and budget cuts resulted in less than adequate cash sponsorships. We’ll look forward to working with our many partners to bring the event back next year.”
